Calculations for the Antibiotic Stewardship Dashboard

The Antibiotic Stewardship Dashboard in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) lists details about antibiotic use across your organization to support tracking and reporting as part of your Antibiotic Stewardship program.

Numbers are calculated based on the selected filters and the following:

  • Orders are counted from active cases in IPC with pharmacy orders attached.

  • Resident days are the total number of residents based on the current census, multiplied by the number of days selected. For example, 200 residents in the facility for 30 days = 6000 resident days.

  • Antibiotics are counted if they are in the antibacterial medication class.

  • Anti-infectives are counted if they are in the anti-infective medication class. For example, antibacterials, antibiotics, antifungals, antiprotozoans, and antivirals.

Item Name

Description

Cases with antibiotics

The number of cases with antibiotics attached. If a resident has 2 antibiotics attached, they are counted 1 time.

Multi drug resistant organisms

The number of cases with Yes selected for MDRO.

Days of therapy/1000 resident days

The average days of therapy per 1000 resident days based on the following:

Days of therapy = total number of days antibiotics were given. If a resident is on 2 antibiotics, they are both counted. For example, Levaquin x 7 days and Amoxicillin x 7 days = 14 days of therapy.

For example, for a 30 day calculation with 200 residents in the facility = 43 (days of therapy) divided by 6000 (resident days) multiplied by 1000. Total days is 7.16, so 7 days shows on the tile.

Note

N/A shows if the duration filter is less than 28 days.

Antibiotic starts/1000 resident days

The number of antibiotic starts per 1000 resident days based on the following:

Antibiotic starts = total number of new antibiotics. If a resident starts 2 antibiotics on the same day, it counts as 2.

For example, for a 30 day calculation with 200 residents in the facility = 21 (antibiotic starts) divided by 6000 (resident days) multiplied by 1000. Total days is 3.5, so 4 days shows on the tile.

Note

N/A shows if the duration filter is less than 28 days.

Top 50 anti-infectives by medication class

All anti-infectives grouped by medication class. If a case has 2 orders attached, both are counted. If there are more than 50 anti-infective medication classes, only the 50 most used appear.

Antibiotic Time Out

The number of bacterial cases in IPC that require an Antibiotic Time Out.

Multi drug resistant organisms

The number of cases in each facility with MDRO selected.

Days of therapy/1000 resident days by location

The average days of therapy per 1000 resident days in each facility. Calculations are the same as the Days of therapy/1000 resident days tile.
